Director of Circulation & Planning (Hammacher Schlemmer)

This role is responsible for driving growth and profitability and maximizing the productivity of the Hammacher catalog business through continual improvements in circulation and marketing planning. This role will plan, direct, coordinate and oversee all catalog aspects for the organization. This role is responsible for catalog strategy and merchandising, and partners on creative execution and technical development; justifying, planning, prioritizing, and overseeing system projects to be developed based on cost/benefit and strategic need. 

Develops long and short term business strategies and oversees implementation. Develops actionable annual and seasonal business plans to achieve sales and profit plans. Responsible for implementing costs savings procedures while increasing development. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Print Marketing team.

Directly supervises and leads the team.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  A critical member of the senior management team, this role is a major contributor to the strategic direction of the company, influences the priorities of other departments, and expects excellence from all.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee execution of mailings, including housefile selections, list rental and merge/purge processing
  • Marketing planning, budgeting and management of yearly demand and in-mail expenses
  • Test design and analysis to enhance response and spend of customers, including ad hoc analysis (e.g. customer and market research) by leveraging marketing database
  • Report on sales and profitability, including sales forecasting
  • Manage circulation staff – hire, motivate, and develop personnel
  • Manage relationships with vendors required to accomplish the above, including service bureaus, database suppliers, list brokers, and list managers.

Required Qualifications

            Education, Licensing, Certification, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 7-10 years direct marketing experience, 10+ years in a catalog environment
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of circulation, selection, RFM methodology and forecasting performance
  • Experience with statistical modeling
  • Ability to thrive in a highly quantitative, fast-paced environment
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and financial expertise, including understanding of P&L.  Exceptional spreadsheet capabilities.
  • Experience with marketing database analysis and database marketing techniques
  • Strong marketing intuition
  • Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and management skills
