Product Developer

Research and develop  new doll concepts, and development and management of backends for existing programs for more senior staff members , as needed. Creatively brainstorm and concept new ideas that will appeal to the doll buyer.  Handle various aspects of doll development including face research and references, costuming direction for the doll, and correspondence with artists, vendors and licensors. Manage administrative functions including tracking, scheduling and updating reports and product programs. Creatively solve issues and problems related to design, scheduling and costs.


Concepting & Developing Products

  • Review all internal and external doll and collectible research on an ongoing basis to gain an understanding of the emotional drivers associated with doll collecting.
  • Provide detailed critiques of products in all stages of development, pre-production samples and production samples including backstamps and certificates to the vendors.
  • Participate in concepting and brainstorming with Product Development team.  Develops and presents a minimum of 3-5 concepts for each blurb meeting.  In conjunction with Marketer, flesh out the blurb to a fully fleshed out concept. Upon approval of the concept, present  mockup/sketches, face references, artist recommendations and specs for costuming and cogs.
  • Ensure product spec packages are sent out to sourcing manager for COGS for each product.
  • Follow up on outstanding VIP issues in a timely fashion.

Contacts with Artists & Outside Resources

  • Work with outside resources such as designers, artists/sculptors, model shops, licensors, and vendors on new concepts and information and material required to complete the job. Communicate and direct outside sketch artists, illustrators, sculptors, painters, mold makers, and manufacturers. Expand design pool (designers, sketch artists, sculptors, painters, etc) by proactively seeking out new talent to result in quality and reliable resources for the product development team.

Required Qualifications (Education, Licensing, Certification, and Experience)

  • MA, MFA, BA or BFA degree in Art, Art History, Fine/Studio Arts, Illustration, Product Design, Sculpture, Graphic Design or an art related field.
  • 1-4 years work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills – both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of MAC/PC including Excel, Word, PhotoShop, InDesign.
  • Strong internship experience or a minimum of two years work experience is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with fashion/apparel/costume design preferred
  • Experience in a clerical and/or art and craft environment is a major plus. 
  • Familiarity with Illustrator and/or databases is helpful.
